The community unites with several festivals and ongoing events throughout the year, including the Gibsonville Fall Festival and Market Days each summer. Greensboro is located just 16 miles west of Gibsonville, putting big city attractions, in addition to employment opportunities, within reach for residents. Additionally, many Gibsonville residents are employed at the nearby Elon University located in Elon.

Gibsonville has one school within the Guilford County School System, Gibsonville Elementary School and many others in the vicinity, including Eastern Middle School and Eastern Guilford High School. There are 16 private schools in Greensboro, located just west of Gibsonville. Gibsonville contains no institutions of higher learning, but Elon University is located east of the city, accessible with a short drive. Additionally, residents may access a number of colleges and universities in Greensboro, including Greensboro College, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and many more.



Prior to 1851, there was no official town of Gibsonville, and only a few buildings dedicated to local farmers and gold miners existed. The first local post office was called Gibsonville when it opened in 1855, but it wasn’t until 1871 that the town officially became Gibsonville. It was named after Joseph Gibson, one of the first prominent planters in the area and a gold miner. Gold mining played a major role in Gibsonville when deposits were discovered on Gibson Hill in the early 1800s. Gibson’s house is now recognized as a Guilford County landmark property. The Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum located in the former Palmer Memorial Institute, is North Carolina’s first official state historic site to honor an African American and a woman.
